Tips And Tricks For Staying Cool And Comfortable In The Summer

Summer has arrived, and it's a great time to enjoy the outdoors. But protecting yourself from the heat is also important because high temperatures kill hundreds of people yearly. Heatwaves are happening around the world. And due to climate change, they're getting hotter and longer. While basking in the sunshine is a wonderful thing, extreme heat can be deadly, affecting younger and older people, pregnant women, and those with chronic health conditions.

But we can do lots to protect ourselves and our loved ones. Here are a few tips for keeping cool during the heatwave. Be sure to follow the tips and consider using good sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30, wearing sunglasses and a hat, and staying in the shade as much as possible. It's also good to check the local weather forecast and plan your activities accordingly. Remember to stay safe and have fun.

Tips For Staying Cool During The Summer Months

1. Stay Hydrated
Drink more water throughout the day to help regulate your body temperature and prevent dehydration. Add hydrating fluids like coconut water, fresh fruit juices, and herbal teas. Try to avert alcohol and caffeine, as they can dehydrate you.

2. Dress Appropriately
Wear light, breathable clothing and choose clothes made of pure natural fabrics like cotton, linen, and rayon. Loose-fitting clothing in light colors can also help to keep you cool. Avoid dark colors and synthetic materials that can trap heat.

3. Seek Shade
If you spend time outdoors, seek shade under trees, umbrellas, or canopies to protect yourself from the sun's direct rays.

4. Use Fans and Air Conditioning
Use fans or air conditioning to circulate cool air in your home or workplace. If you don't have air conditioning, try placing a big bowl of ice in front of a fan for a DIY air conditioner.

5. Avoid Activities During the Hottest Part of The Day
Try to schedule outdoor activities for early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are cooler.

6. Stay Indoors During Heatwaves
When there's a heatwave, it's best to stay indoors as much as possible you can and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and heat. Stay indoors during the hottest part of the day, usually between 11 am and 4 pm, if possible. If you must go out, wear a hat and sunglasses to save yourself from the sun.

7. Eat Light Meals
Eat light, refreshing meals: Avoid heavy, spicy, and oily meals that make you uncomfortable in the heat. Instead, choose light, refreshing meals high in water content, like salads, fruits, and smoothies.

8. Use Sunscreen
Protect your skin from the sun's harmful UV rays by using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Apply it generously and reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating.

9. Stay Informed
Check the weather forecast and stay informed about heat advisories and warnings in your area so you can take appropriate precautions.

10. Keep Your Home Cool
Use fans, air conditioning, or natural ventilation to keep your home cool. Close your windows and curtains during the hottest part of the day and open them at night when it's cooler.

11. Take Cool Showers
Cool showers or baths can help lower your body temperature and refresh you. If you need a quick cooling down, shower in the morning or evening.

Following these tips, you can enjoy your summer without suffering through the heat. Always remember to reapply sunscreen every few hours to reduce the risk of burning.
